DIY Sunglass Holder

Yesterday, I made a sunglass holder for all of our sunglasses and hung it up in the laundry room.

With spring just around the corner, I thought I'd get ready by organizing our sunglasses.

We used to store the kids' sunglasses in a basket in the laundry room, but that wasn't working out too well.
(organizing that shelf is next on my to do list)

We couldn't see what was in the basket and the kids couldn't reach it to put their sunglasses away.

I decided we needed a new way to store our sunglasses.  So where did I look to for some inspiration?

Why, Pinterest of course.

There didn't seem to be very many options, basically just two different styles.

1.  Sunglasses in a frame:

2.  Sunglasses on a board:

I also checked Amazon.com and did find two holders for multiple pairs of sunglasses HERE and HERE, but they wouldn't work in my laundry room, they were more for a bedroom.

I knew I wanted to keep our sunglasses stored in the laundry room since that is the entrance/exit we use most often (it leads to the garage).

I was planning to do choice 1 and was thinking of using the large frame all the way to the right in my little laundry room gallery wall.

But as usual, I changed my mind and decided to add a piece of wood underneath the grouping of pictures instead.

It was pretty easy to make and only cost me .97 cents for the twine since I had all the other materials on hand.

First I measured how wide I wanted my board to be.  I wanted it to be as wide as the grouping of pictures which was 24.75 inches.   Then I went into the basement to see what size wood we had.  I didn't want it to be too thick so the 2x4 lumber was out.  We also had a 1x8 piece of wood laying around so I just used that.
I cut it to length, cut small notches for the twine on either end, sanded it, primed it, painted it, added the twine and hung it on the wall.

As for how I added the twine, I used a staple gun to secure it to the back.  I stapled the middle staple first, then folded the twine back over the staple toward the left edge and stapled again.  I then folded the twine over the second staple and brought it toward the right and stapled my third staple.

To hang it on the wall, I stapled the twine as indicated by the two arrows below.

This created a level spot for the nails to hang onto.

I hammered in two nails below the collage of pictures and then hung up the sunglass holder.

Here it is all decked out with some sunglasses.  And yes the pair on the right is mine and they are missing one of the side pieces, guess I should fix that.

I like how it's right next to the mirror so we can make sure we look cool before leaving the house.

I think it would look even cooler with some added vinyl or a saying stenciled on it.
Something like this:

Or maybe one of these other ways I created using PicMonkey:

Or maybe a different saying such as: "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades"

Anyone else got any ideas of what to add to it?

I like this quick and easy project and how all of sunglasses are in plain view just waiting for those sunny days.

Oh, and while this is out of the Babes reach, that doesn't mean it's out of her sight.  She wanted to wear some sunglasses, and just one pair wouldn't do.

I'm submitting this idea for the winter Pinterest Challenge (not sponsored by Pinterest or anyone else, just dreamed up by Sherry from Young House Love and Katie Bower to make us stop pinning and start doing).
